What is Hybridisation?
Hybridisation (or hybridization) is the concept of mixing atomic orbitals to form new hybrid orbitals with different shapes and energies suitable for bonding. sp hybridisation produces two linear orbitals (as in acetylene), sp² produces three trigonal planar orbitals (as in ethylene), and sp³ produces four tetrahedral orbitals (as in methane). Hybridisation explains observed molecular geometries.
