Homologous Series

What is Homologous Series?

A homologous series is a family of organic compounds that share the same general molecular formula and functional group, with consecutive members differing by a –CH₂– unit. Members of a homologous series show gradual, predictable changes in physical properties (boiling point, density) but similar chemical properties. The alkanes (CₙH₂ₙ₊₂) are a classic example.
