What is Main Group Elements?

Main group elements are the elements in Groups 1, 2, and 13–18 of the periodic table (s-block and p-block elements). They include alkali metals, alkaline earth metals, metalloids, non-metals, halogens, and noble gases. Their chemistry is largely determined by their valence s and p electrons. The main group elements are also called representative elements and include the most chemically diverse elements.

Properties & Characteristics

Groups 1–2 (s-block) and 13–18 (p-block). Predictable oxidation states based on group number. Atomic radii increase down group, decrease across period. Ionization energy decreases down group, increases across period. Electronegativity increases across period, decreases down group. First row (Period 2) elements often show anomalous properties.

Uses & Applications

Industrial chemicals (Na, Cl, Ca, Si, Al are among the most used elements). Agriculture (N, P, K fertilizers). Construction (Ca in cement, Si in glass). Electronics (Si, Ge semiconductors). Medicine (Ca, Na, K, Mg — biological electrolytes). Energy (Li batteries). Polymers (C, H, N, O, Cl based).

Safety Information

Main group elements span enormous safety range: from noble gases (inert) to fluorine (most reactive, corrosive) to alkali metals (violently reactive with water). Each element and compound requires individual safety assessment.
