Also Known AsXylene cyanol FF, coomassie blue G, Blue dye XC, electrophoresis tracking dye

What is Xylene Cyanol?

A blue dye used as a tracking dye in gel electrophoresis. It migrates through agarose gels at approximately the same rate as DNA fragments of 4-5 kilobases. Often used with bromophenol blue to monitor the progress of electrophoresis separation.

Formula & Notation

Xylene cyanol: C₂₅H₂₇N₂O₆S₂Na; MW ≈ 538.6 g/mol

Other Names / Synonyms: Xylene cyanol FF, coomassie blue G, Blue dye XC, electrophoresis tracking dye

Properties & Characteristics

Xylene cyanol FF (also called coomassie blue G) is a blue anionic dye commonly used as a tracking marker in gel electrophoresis. It migrates through polyacrylamide gels at a predictable rate proportional to the fragment size. In agarose gels it migrates similarly to approximately 5000 bp DNA. It is a triphenylmethane dye with sulfonate groups.

Uses & Applications

Xylene cyanol is used as a gel electrophoresis loading dye to monitor the progress of nucleic acid or protein migration. It is often used in combination with bromophenol blue to track two size ranges simultaneously. It is also used as an acid-base indicator dye in some applications.

Safety Information

Xylene cyanol FF is a laboratory staining reagent with low acute toxicity but should not be ingested. It is typically supplied in loading buffers containing glycerol. Standard laboratory precautions apply.
