What is Ionization Isomers?

Ionization isomers are coordination compounds that have the same molecular formula but differ in the ligand coordinated to the central metal atom versus the counter-ion present outside the coordination sphere. For example, [Co(NH₃)₅Br]SO₄ and [Co(NH₃)₅SO₄]Br are ionization isomers: the first releases SO₄²⁻ on dissolution, while the second releases Br⁻. They are distinguished by the different ions produced upon dissolution in water.
