What is Group?

In the periodic table, a group (or family) is a vertical column containing elements with the same number of valence electrons and similar chemical properties. There are 18 groups in the modern periodic table, numbered 1–18 (IUPAC convention) or using the older IA–VIIIA labelling. Elements in the same group exhibit similar reactivity patterns and form similar compounds.
