Group

Quick Reference
Also Known AsGroup, periodic table group, chemical family, column of the periodic table

What is Group?

A vertical column in the periodic table. Elements in the same group have the same number of valence electrons, similar electron configurations, and similar chemical properties. Group numbers 1-18 (IUPAC) or IA-VIIIA (traditional) indicate the number or type of valence electrons.

Properties & Characteristics

A group (or family) in the periodic table is a vertical column of elements that share the same valence electron configuration and therefore similar chemical properties. There are 18 groups, numbered 1-18 (IUPAC). Group 1 (alkali metals): ns¹; Group 17 (halogens): ns²np⁵; Group 18 (noble gases): ns²np⁶ (n≥2). Properties vary periodically down a group due to increasing atomic size, more electron shielding, and relativistic effects for heavy elements.

Uses & Applications

Group relationships allow chemists to predict properties of elements and their compounds by analogy within a group. The chemistry of unknown Group 14 elements can be estimated from known C, Si, Ge behaviour. Group properties guide material selection in chemistry, electronics, and medicine.

Safety Information

Elements in the same group often share hazard profiles: all alkali metals (Group 1) react with water; all halogens (Group 17) are oxidising and toxic; all noble gases are asphyxiants at high concentration. Group membership is a useful first guide for hazard assessment.
