Accuracy

Quick Reference
Also Known AsTrueness; correctness; measurement accuracy

What is Accuracy?

Accuracy is the degree of closeness of a measured or calculated value to the true or accepted value of the quantity being measured. It is distinct from precision, which refers to reproducibility of measurements. A highly accurate measurement is close to the true value, regardless of how consistent repeated measurements are.

Properties & Characteristics

Expressed as percent error: % error = |measured − true| / true × 100%; not the same as precision; affected by systematic errors (calibration, instrument bias); improved by calibration and using reference standards

Uses & Applications

Analytical chemistry quality control; validating experimental results; calibrating instruments and measuring devices; expressing uncertainty in scientific measurements

Safety Information

No direct hazard — a measurement concept. Poor accuracy in chemical dosing, however, can lead to dangerous chemical exposures or failed safety procedures.

Always consult the SDS/MSDS before handling any chemical. This information is for educational purposes only.
