What is Yttria?

Yttria (yttrium(III) oxide, Y₂O₃) is a white, high-melting (2,439°C) rare earth oxide that is one of the most stable and refractory ceramic materials known. It is used as a dopant for cubic zirconia (to produce the tetragonal and cubic phases used in hard coatings and fuel cells), in the manufacture of phosphors for fluorescent lamps and cathode ray tubes, in laser crystals (Nd:YAG), and in transparent ceramic armor materials. Yttria is also used in catalysts and high-temperature crucibles.
