Eluate

Quick Reference
Also Known AsColumn fraction; chromatographic fraction; mobile phase fraction; collected fraction

What is Eluate?

The eluate is the solution that exits from a chromatographic column, containing the separated components of the original mixture dissolved in the eluent. In preparative chromatography, individual fractions of the eluate are collected sequentially. The eluate contains analytes at progressively different retention times based on their affinity for the stationary phase.

Properties & Characteristics

Collected fractions from the column exit; contains separated analyte(s) in mobile phase; monitored by UV detector (HPLC), flame ionisation detector (GC), or fraction collector (preparative chromatography); concentration determined by peak area; purity assessed by single peak in chromatogram

Uses & Applications

Collecting purified fractions in preparative column chromatography; fraction collection in HPLC; protein purification (ion exchange, size exclusion chromatography); environmental sample analysis; pharmaceutical product isolation

Safety Information

Contains organic solvents (flammable, toxic) or aqueous buffers. Handle according to SDS of the eluent and analytes present. Some fractions may contain toxic intermediates or products.

Always consult the SDS/MSDS before handling any chemical. This information is for educational purposes only.
