What is Oxidizing Agent?

A chemical species that gains electrons from another species in a redox reaction, thereby oxidizing that species. The oxidizing agent undergoes reduction (its oxidation state decreases). Identifying oxidizing and reducing agents is essential for balancing redox reactions.

Properties & Characteristics

An oxidizing agent (US English spelling of oxidising agent) is a chemical that accepts electrons from another substance (reduces itself while oxidising the other substance). In half-reaction notation: Ox + ne⁻ → Red. The strength of an oxidizing agent is measured by its standard reduction potential E°; more positive E° means stronger oxidizing agent. Most reactive: F₂ > O₃ > H₂O₂ > KMnO₄ > Cl₂ > O₂ > Br₂ > Fe³⁺ > I₂.

Uses & Applications

Oxidizing agents are essential in: industrial chemistry (air oxidation of SO₂ to SO₃ in Contact process; O₂ in steel making), environmental remediation (H₂O₂ and O₃ for oxidative degradation of organic pollutants), bleaching of paper and textiles (Cl₂, NaOCl, H₂O₂), and rocket propulsion (liquid oxygen as oxidizer in LOX-LH₂ rockets).

Safety Information

Same as oxidising agent (id 634): strong oxidizers react violently with organic materials. Liquid oxygen (LOX) at −183°C is both a cryogenic hazard and an explosion hazard in contact with hydrocarbons. Chlorine gas, concentrated HNO₃, and permanganates require specialised storage, handling, and disposal procedures.
