What is Ore?

An ore is a naturally occurring rock or mineral from which a valuable metal or mineral can be extracted profitably. Ores consist of the desired mineral mixed with unwanted rock (gangue), and the economic viability of extraction depends on the grade (concentration) of the ore and the cost of the extraction process. Common examples include hematite (Fe₂O₃) as an iron ore, bauxite (Al₂O₃·nH₂O) as an aluminum ore, and malachite (Cu₂(OH)₂CO₃) as a copper ore.
