Flame Test

Quick Reference
Also Known AsBead test (related), qualitative flame test, metal ion identification test

What is Flame Test?

A qualitative analytical technique used to detect certain metal ions based on the characteristic color they impart to a flame. When metal ions are heated in a flame, electrons become excited and emit light of characteristic wavelengths. Used to identify alkali and alkaline earth metals.

Properties & Characteristics

A flame test is a qualitative analytical technique in which a small amount of a metal compound is introduced into a Bunsen burner flame and the characteristic colour of the emitted light is observed. The heat excites metal ions to higher electronic energy levels; as electrons return to the ground state, they emit photons of specific wavelengths characteristic of the element. Sodium gives an intense, persistent yellow colour (589 nm D-line).

Uses & Applications

Flame tests are used in qualitative inorganic analysis to identify alkali metals and alkaline earth metals in solutions and solids. They are a rapid, simple screening test. Flame photometry (instrumental flame test) is used quantitatively for Na, K, Li, and Ca in clinical analysis (serum electrolytes).

Safety Information

Flame tests use an open gas flame. Long hair must be tied back and flammable material kept away. Flame test wires (platinum or nichrome) become hot; allow to cool before touching. Some metal compounds used (barium, lead, thallium) are toxic — avoid ingestion and inhalation of their vapours.
