What is Ether?
An ether is an organic compound containing an oxygen atom bonded between two carbon groups (R–O–R'). Ethers are relatively unreactive, making them useful as solvents. Diethyl ether (C₂H₅OC₂H₅) is a common laboratory solvent and was historically used as an anaesthetic. Crown ethers are cyclic polyethers with important applications in coordination chemistry.
