What is Electroplating?

Electroplating is the process of depositing a thin layer of metal onto a conductive surface using electrolysis. The object to be coated acts as the cathode, the plating metal acts as the anode, and both are immersed in an electrolyte solution containing ions of the plating metal. Applications include gold and silver plating of jewellery, chrome plating of car parts, and zinc galvanising of steel.
